The Aqua Series Brooches, inspired by rippling wave patterns in water as well as the raked patterns of sand in the Zen gardens of Japan, would be impossible without computer controlled machining of his graphite molds.
From this work, and a recent residency at the Uroboros Glass factory in Portland, Oregon, the desire to work on a larger scale came to fruition with the Aqua Series Sculptures, also debuting in this exhibition. In addition to these two series, In Glass will feature the Organic Series Brooches, the artist’s foray into transforming commonplace materials, like fruits and vegetables, into glass, in hopes that the viewer will see them in a new light.

Donald Friedlich received his BFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from Rhode Island School of Design in 1982. He has been a leading figure in contemporary American jewelry and has served a term as President of the Society of North American Goldsmiths and earlier as Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board of Metalsmith magazine.

His jewelry has been shown in galleries and museums all over the world and is in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Mint Museum of Craft and Design, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and others. In 2016, he was invited to participate in Schmuck (the annual contemporary jewelry fair) in Munich, Germany.

Friedlich will serve as the Keynote Speaker at Society of North American Goldsmiths Annual Conference, Ashville, NC and will lecture in Washington, DC as part of the James Renwick Alliance Distinguished Artist Series.
