Apply for a positon of teacher in residency at DSAF and enjoy the opportunity to participate in an inspiring, groundbreaking project and to engage with aspiring young artists and designers with a great desire to learn not only technical skills but also through personal involvement and experience.

The open educational system of master/trainer/trainee provides both traditional teaching-based and independent-learning curricula, a rare combination in Egypt. The DSAF collaborates with Alchimia Contemporary Jewelry School in Florence, Italy, for a rich exchange of culture and design. Still in its first years of innovation, The DSAF has quickly gained wide recognition and prestige.
In this diverse setting we offer you the opportunity to participate in an inspiring, groundbreaking project and to engage with aspiring young artists and designers with a great desire to learn not only technical skills but also through personal involvement and experience. The learning experience is in all cases mutual and will undoubtedly enrich your own work.
You will be part of a small, dedicated team of practicing artists and designers and other staff in a cutting-edge yet intimate institution where your own input and ideas are an essential tool to shape ways of teaching and learning for the students.

Established in 2013 by designer Azza Fahmy, The Design Studio by Azza Fahmy (The DSAF) is the first contemporary jewelry design school in the MENA region. Located in a historical district of Cairo and accommodated in a small, artisan run compound along with pottery workshops, artist studios, a contemporary arts center and communal spaces, The DSAF seeks to provide for Egyptian, regional and international students an opportunity to become contemporary designers, setting a standard of progressive visual culture, education, and handwork in the region. The DSAF curriculum offers a three-year program of intensive education.

Conditions

The scheduled duration of the residency is two months and can be extended according to mutual agreement. Teachers in residence are expected to teach three days per week [from 10:00 am to 17:00 pm] plus additional workshops according to their technical specialties and expertise that will be held in the evening once a month. Depending on demands and circumstances teaching times can be flexible sometimes. Teaching language is English. Adjusted to local standards the monthly salary is 7000 EGP (circa. 800 €) , additional courses will be paid extra [evening courses]. Accommodation is provided in a studio annex of the school. Travel costs are covered up to 2500 EGP (circa. 300 €) . Local health insurance will be provided within the school facilities therefore an additional international and/or travel insurance is recommended. You will have to issue your own visa since every country has its own procedures, but we will be happy to help you in any kind of logistic need it.
We would like to learn about your specifics in techniques but also your motivation for an experience that can be challenging at times, both for external and personal reasons. We would also like to see an awareness of the cultural, social and political situation in Egypt.

Requirements
Applicants are expected to be competent within the technical areas they propose and able to convey practical and theoretical knowledge in the field of design and jewelry craftsmanship from outside Egypt. Other than a certain cultural sensitivity and an awareness of the cultural, social and political situation in Egypt, teachers should have high interpersonal, motivational and team skills. Intercultural experience, flexibility and the ability to handle unpredictable situations are valuable assets. Teaching experience and/or a sense of leadership is a plus. While passing on an understanding of the complexity of the craft it is important for The DSAF teachers to be sensitive for the students' individual level in order to guide them to design projects which can be realized in the desired form according to their abilities.
Motivation is a big part of the teaching process in the context of an at times frustrating environment for young people.
