Intro
This is the second summer, the school has invited a group of international artists to hold a series of workshops. The intention is to discover new artistic horizons and/or techniques with the students and implement those into their own artistic creations.

Intercultural encounters increasingly influence both our life and work. Recognising, understanding and discussing the differences between one’s own and the other’s culture become elementary skills in dealing with ourselves and the “strangers”. The aim of the International Summer Academy is to create an awareness for those social and personal processes through designing jewellery by acquiring new and old techniques to transition those conflicts into art.

For the second time the Trier University of Applied Sciences opens its workshops to jewellery designers and students. In eight different workshops the participants will be able to discover new artistic horizons and/or techniques and implement those into their own artistic creations. The two week programme gives you the option to choose your own focus and participate either in one course only or to take part in two workshops.

The workhops will be held by artists from Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Scotland and Belgium and in addition to the workshops there will be options to do excursions to jewellery merchants, as well as visits to the agate and coppermines within the Idar-Oberstein area. All in all the International Summer Academy tries to create grounds for exchanges between participants, enabling them to integrate their experiences regarding the new and the old, the regional and the global into their jewellery creations.

Programme

Gemstones: cut, grind, polish with Alexander Friedrich
Dates: 1st - 5th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: max. 5
Language: english and german
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)

Fascination gemstone.
The workshop will give you an introduction to lapidary. In the foreground is a practical understanding of various processing techniques of precious stones like cutting and faceting. Besides, you will learn how to saw, to drill and to engrave. We will start with a general introduction of the theory of the craft and gemology.
Also we visit local stone dealers, where everyone can buy their own raw stones, which we will use for our practical work. Open conversations within the group will help to share experiences and to push ideas forward. The aim of the course is to get a general insight of this special technique and to combine the new skills with your own designs.

Vitreous enameling with Danni Schwaag
Dates: 1st - 5th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: max. 6
Language: english and german
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)

In the middle of the 20th century enamel has been sliding into the field for the hobby craftsperson. Adult education classes have been offered to the general public. The new combination of genuine enamel art and a presence of mastery in this field caused many people to distance themselves from enamel, especially among young artists. Enamel stayed in the background. For some years now it has been reappearing in contemporary jewellery art and we should celebrate it! Different techniques like powdering, painting and drawing with enamel will be shown in several steps.
No previous knowledge required.

Sn-Al-Ag: metal casting with Peter Vermandere
Dates: 1st - 5th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: min. 6 / max. 12
Language: english, german and flamish
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)
Extra costs for material: 40€

Insignia for everyday life.
Starting from a single personal inspirational point we will look how our idea will be transformed and altered by the techniques we use. We will explore diffenrent ways of molding and casting: carving direct molds in stone, rubber and plaster gives a different result. We will use these same molds and models for further development through sand casting and lost wax casting. We will be using pewter, aluminium, bronze, alpaca, brass and silver.

Intaglio & cameos: gemstone engraving with Sabine Wehr
Dates: 1st - 5th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: max. 4
Language: english and german
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)

The handcraft of engraving stones has a long tradition and still has a huge potential in contemporary jewellery design. The focus of the workshop is to develop a feeling for the process of engraving stones from the region, like the Agate, which used to be found in the Hunsrück area. In the professional equipped gem stone studio, each participant will be working on a separate work station. Basic techniques, which includes the handling of the engraving machine and the tools, will give you an understanding for the process and help to develop your own ideas with professional advices by the teacher.

Mistakes and other beautiful creatures with Gemma Draper
Dates: 8th - 12th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: min. 6 / max. 10
Language: english
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)

There is a full range of possibilities in missing the point and not getting it right away. It is a matter of crossing choices, goals and expectations that can be rendered as a generator of options rather than to lead to a single solid conclusion. This workshop will take some actual mistakes, works that are considered to be failures, as a starting point to explore the terrain that our judgments and selections have been drawing as accepted playground. Let’s find out how good can we be at failing and how erratic and error strolling can bring us a richer map reading.

PUK micro welding with Petr Dvorak
Dates: 8th - 12th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: min. 6 / max. 10
Language: german, english and czech
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)

The cave in the mind / connections with Judy McCaig
Dates: 8th - 12th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: min.6 / max. 9
Language: english, spanish and catalan
1 workshop = 625 € (students 475 €)
2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)

Reliefs, line drawing, punch-making, volume, texture and colour are achieved by combinations of press forming, roller printing, stamping/hand made punches and more. Riveting/cold connexions then allow these elements to be combined in layers, in low relief, mobile or static. Combine the graphic potential of created images, reliefs, and volume press formed or roller printed into metal with the wide range of colours that enamel, a mixture of gold/silver/copper leafs, patinas and oxides permits.
This course is split into a timetable of learning the new techniques, making and experimenting with press forming, roller-printing combined with enamels, learning and practising the varios types of rivets and their uses, design and composition, construction and finish of pieces. Rivets enable connections of recycled, found objects and natural elements.
Each student is encouraged to explore these expressive possibilities to stimulate their own personal creativity.

Photography with Manuel Ocaña
Dates: 8th - 12th of August | Duration: 5 days, 35 hrs
Participants: min. 6 / max. 8

2 workshops = 1100 € (students 800 €)
