Intro
Trained as a graphic designer and printmaker, Biba Schutz has been a practicing, self-taught metal smith and jeweler for more than 20 years. She is well known for combining unexpected materials with metal in her work. In 2012, she began incorporating glass into her jewelry designs and was the recipient of an Artist Residency at The Corning Museum of Glass in the spring of 2014. Schutz’s works can be found in public and private collections around the world including the Racine Art Museum, Racine, WI; Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, the Newark Museum of Art Art, New Jersey, Boston’s Museum of Fine Art and the Corning Museum of Glass. She currently lives and works in New York City.

Statement

Biba Schutz’s newest body of work is an evolution of the artist’s personal relationship with materials, process, and emotion. Her practice is a dialogue on the challenge and seduction of glass and metal, the movement and communication between liquid and crystal. The visceral quality of glass speaks to Schutz’s intuitive process and fluidity of her language as an artist, a journey continually considering the body and wearability. Schutz’s pieces offer space for contemplation and places to hide—a dance between what’s revealed and obscured, porous and dense, light reflected and absorbed. Light itself becomes a material, saturated within the glass and reflected outward. An inward journey given form, the work connects fantasy and memory through the structure of jewelry and adornment.
