Galerie Marzee was founded in 1978 as a gallery for contemporary jewellery, and has since become one of the principal promoters of contemporary jewellery and silverware. Since 1995 the gallery is housed in a former granary on Nijmegen's waterfront, midway between the two bridges that cross the river here. With 850 square meters of exhibition space, Galerie Marzee is one of the largest galleries in the Netherlands, and the largest gallery for modern jewellery in the world.
In June 2004, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of Galerie Marzee, the gallery opened the Marzee Collection. This large permanent presentation shows the pieces acquired by the gallery since the start in 1979.
Each year the gallery awards two prices. In April the Marzee Prize is awarded to an artist for its complete works and in August of each year the gallery awards the Marzee Graduate Prize to 5-7 young artists for their graduate work.
These prizewinners are offered a workshop in Atelier Ravary in Belgium.
