Having graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and The Royal College of Art, Andrew Lamb is currently work as a jewellery designer maker, exhibiting and selling in the UK and abroad.  Based in Aberdeen Scotland, the artist also balances designing and making with lecturing at Glasgow School of Art, which is a post he has held for the last 5 years.  Recently Andrew exhibited in the Beijing International Contemporary Metal Art Exhibition and taught a one week workshop at The Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Statement

My inspiration and influences range from visual and optical effects to textile pattern and structure, natural textures, repetitive form and detail.  The techniques I have developed focus primarily on methods of working in wire to make one off pieces. I work in precious metal and experimentation is key to the way that I develop new ideas.
The latest themes in my work include creating of ‘lenticular’ changing colour imagery and patterns assembled using thousands of wire ‘pixels’. Through the use of multiple mixed alloys of gold, silver, platinum and palladium I am producing a surface that ripples and reflects. The jewellery changes as it moves, it draws in the viewer and different views create a moment of surprise. As my jewellery tilts and moves the surfaces ripple and reflect, drawing in the viewer and creating a moment of surprise. I am fascinated by the way but I like to highlight imperfections in the way we see and the way we perceive.

I recently had a Solo Exhibition at the Scottish Gallery titled ‘Under the Lens’, as well as reflecting my concepts, the name of the show provides an insight into the way in which I work, a great deal of which involves using a microscope and laser welder together with more traditional tools and equipment. The digital catalogue shows some of my work in a little more detail.
