Statement

Paris 1931. Salon d’Automne, Jean Depres had the courage to exhibit his bijoux moteurs in the Aviation and Modern Art Show: a riot of washers, nuts and lock nuts, bolts, screws, plates, metal rings, pins and cotters that revealed to the world a new vision of jewellery, industrial beauty. Depres preferred to exalt the metallic squeaking of progress over the delicate imagery of flora and fauna that adorned the new century and for this reason often defined himself “the metal and hammer man”. This provocation in a historical moment when the main emphasis was still on the search to restrain the impact of industrialization on art did not go unnoticed. The critic George Besson actually went as far as calling him a “danger to society”. He was right to do so. Together with the UAC, Union des Artistes Modernes and Bauhaus artists, in particular Naum Slutzky and Laslon Moholy Nagy, they were destroying the foundations of the Kunstgewerbe, the so called applied arts or decorative arts in favour of that which in America had been recently defined Industrial Design.
The functionalist breath, that cut through the history of the arts in the 30s, in reality had very little of functional about it, as rightly highlighted by Theodor Adorno, who preferred the harmony of function, something very different. Cleansed of the ideology of the pioneers bijoux moteur has made converts for its mechanic beauty and during the 20th century there was a exultation of metallic trinkets with varying results. When Emma spoke to me about her jewellery, telling me of her forays into this manly temple of ironmongery, I thought of her as an umpteenth imitator of Depres, but seeing, touching and wearing her creations was enough to convince me of how wrong I had been.

Emma manages to mould the brutishness of steel into a concentration of delicacy and femininity.
“My pieces go from being a hard and unalterable material to becoming a soft and supple mesh like a fabric – she declares – I take handfuls of screws and washers and play around with them, attaching them in a multitude of ways, creating new shapes, going back and trying again until I find equilibrium of shape and overall smoothness.

With a feigned casualness, screws and their similar, embrace each other in a heavenly dance, creating slender meshes such as the lacework of the bracelets or the arabesque thread of the necklaces and also the dainty and alluring handbags, so elegant that we forget what they are made of. Impossible? Don one of her bracelets or necklaces, carry one of her bags and you will find it difficult to believe that what envelops you so delicately and elegantly is made with the same materials that hold up a ceiling.

Very rarely have I seen denied with such obstinacy the nature of a material and the vocation of a shape in an attempt, which here has been a big success, to give them new importance and new landscapes.

Emma Francesconi’s jewels become strident antinomies: masculine/feminine, rough/smooth, tactile/visual, functional/aesthetic and so on in a game of adjournments that represent the most interesting part of her research. It must be a legacy from infancy when she says “I tried to magically change indication of things and give them a new meaning”, it might be because she worked for nearly twenty years in a multinational company specializing in implants for surgical orthopaedics, frequenting the production labs to describe and quantify production costs, that Emma manages to hide well the complexity of her work, conceptual and productive. Even if she maintains that “my objective is that of maintaining the essence of the material and of the shape, to take a handful of screws and make a piece of jewellery, limiting where possible my intervention” this can only happen because she knows extremely well the law of mechanics and the materials and how to combine them.

Emma’s jewellery is in fact a concentration of art and mechanics, poetry and science, inspiration and determination, branched roads of a unitary path which we could call life.
