Statement

I am interested in the idea of inhabiting and re-imagining a place/space that is firmly situated within the ‘every day’. A place/space that appears innocuous and incidental to an urban environment, for example a thoroughfare, the heavy concrete edges of a wharf, a car-park situated in a popular tourist site or a footpath that straddles a road and a river. By way of engaging with a variety of diverse sites within Tasmania, from the mundane to the historically rich, I intend to explore the urban context as a rich repository to contest and reimagine my jewellery practice. It is the echoes of these incidental places, the traces of past activities, lives and structures, which the passage of time has sought to erase that draw me in. These pockmarked and scarified sites present a rich context to prise misplaced memories and to construct a fictional intimacy between people, places and jewellery objects.
