Karin Roy Andersson, Sofia Björkman
First, there was the big bang, then about 4 billion years ago life appeared on earth. About 450 million years ago fishes started swimming in the oceans and then 250 million years later birds were flying in the skies. Then it took about 200 million years until a gallery for contemporary jewellery opened in Stockholm and 10 years later another one opened in Göteborg. Strangely enough, the women behind these galleries, Sofia Björkman and Karin Roy Andersson, independently developed an interest in fish and birds, industry, nature and climate impact. Was it something in the water? Was it something in the air? Or maybe it all happens somewhere in between.
In the exhibition, Sofia Björkman shows three-dimensional objects that move between body-related portable works, installations, drawings and paintings. The work flows between different art genres such as free art, crafts and jewellery. They relate to landscape paintings, sketches and decorative objects and the pieces can be seen as wall objects, installations and as portable art - all at the same time. The pieces are made of PLA, a degradable bioplastic that is melted and used to draw three-dimensional paintings. The fish is made of polycarbonate, similar to the plastic bottles that are spread in the oceans. Sofia Björkman is a professional artist from Stockholm. After graduating from Konstfack in 1998, she started PLATINA, a gallery and studio for jewelry art.
Karin Roy Andersson has been working with plastics for a long time. She searches for waste material in garbage containers and ditch banks, at the hairdresser and in restaurants. The exhibition at Not Quite also shows jewellery and objects made of naturally tanned reindeer skin, in a way also a waste material that is not always used after reindeer slaughter. She was introduced to the material by a Sami colleague and the long tradition of leatherwork and the organic material awakens thoughts about heritage, knowledge and maintenance of craft traditions.
