Intro
The Finnish Goldsmiths’ Association, Museo Kruunu and the Finnish Jewellery Art Association, in collaboration with Tavast Goldsmith Tools, are organizing an open international jewellery competition inspired by the sea. The aim is to explore the message the sea conveys to us and interpret it in the form of jewellery. The theme may be approached from many different angles, and the starting point may be, for example, a material, element, phenomenon or concept.
We are looking for new, contemporary applications through the means of jewellery design and jewellery art. Special emphasis will be placed on sustainable development thinking, and the use of recycled and ethically produced materials is recommended in the execution of the jewellery.

The competition consists of two stages. In the first stage, the design phase, participants present their plans as images. For the second stage, 10 designs will be selected for the final, and the finalists will produce their designs as finished jewellery at their own expense.

In the evaluation, attention will be paid to the uniqueness, artistic quality and method of execution of the entries, as well as to how the competition theme “Beneath the Surface” has been interpreted in a new way within the context of jewellery.

The competition is open to all. The official languages of the competition are Finnish and English.

An exhibition of the jewellery accepted into the final will be held at Museo Kruunu, opening on Tuesday 15 September 2026 and continuing until Sunday 14 March 2027.

Beneath the Surface
Beneath the surface, the sea is multifaceted, and its surface reveals certain things that are visually easy to read. In fair weather, the sea is calm and shines like a mirror. In stormy weather, it rages and foams, raising high waves that make travel difficult for seafarers. But what happens beneath the surface?

Beneath the surface, its own world prevails. While storms and waves rage above, below the surface life and the cycle of nature continue without our awareness. Climate change, invasive species, new ecosystems — or peace and harmony hidden from the harsh gaze of the world. What might be happening there? We are now seeking these stories told by the sea in the form of jewellery.
