The 10th edition of the New Talent Award 2024 by Klimt02 aims to recognize the work of graduate students in our field by supporting their careers in the professional world. Nominated by our school members, one of the selected graduates will win the New Talents Award.
Bette masterfully manipulates her materials through hours of laborious reworking, to create pieces that give a nod to their original narrative whilst making a subtle statement about value and materials.

Name of graduation student: Bette Nunneley
Name of guiding teacher: Lin Cheung, Frances Wadsworth Jones, Scott Wilson, Giles Last, Sally Collins, Max Warren, Katharina Dettar
Nominated by Central Saint Martins, BA (Hons) Jewellery Design.
Bette Nunneley’s graduating collection of coin jewellery simultaneously surprises, delights and encourages the viewer to question our perceptions of value and the physical money we often have gathered at the bottom of our purse or in a jar saved for a rainy day on the shelf.
Coins- such a ‘rich’ source of cultural history and storytelling, which are becoming increasingly obsolete in a cashless society- have been redefined, refashioned, remodelled, redesigned and recontextualised as jewellery that reinterpret their value and meaning. Bette masterfully manipulates her materials through hours of laborious reworking, to create pieces that give a nod to their original narrative whilst making a subtle statement about value and materials. Bette states that “My Ideas are my Currency”- which is perfectly captured in this insightful collection of wearable coins.
/ Course Leader, Sally Collins
The statement of the artist:
Bette’s work takes objects with an intrinsic monetary value – coins – and uses them to create a series of artworks that, in this transmogrified form, subvert our ideas about true merit. By becoming part of her process, the jewellery takes on a worth so much greater than the coins on their own. Her detailed analysis of the imagery of coinage makes a playful, tongue-in-cheek reflection on true value; her understanding of the properties of the metal used in money gives her a personal mastery in the use of coins as art.
/ Interpretative text by Hal Warren, BA (Hons) Culture, Criticism and Curation
