The metals studio is located in an old monastery above Cortona overlooking the vast Val di Chiana. It is a creative environment in which faculty work closely with students, at all levels, from many different schools and disciplines. Visits to contemporary jewelry centers such as Alchimia in Florence and Alternatives in Rome balance the vast historical influences of Italy’s Etruscan goldsmithing tradition. Courses on all levels of Jewelry and Metalsmithing are offered along with a variety of art history, studio art, and cultural classes. Beginning students work primarily in the lost-wax casting process and are introduced to soldering and hand finishing techniques. Advanced and graduate students are encouraged to work on individual interests.
