Intro
College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University locates in Shanghai, China. It was developed from the Art and Design Department of the College of Architecture at 2009, the University was established in 1907. The college is committed to the mission of cultivating “sustainable designing and innovating” leading talents needed urgently by the new era. The New Centre of Contemporary Jewellery and Design Culture (NoCC) at the D&I is an international think tank, the only of its kind in China, to unite the powerful resources of the university and the contemporary design and art community. Over 60% of D&I’s master’s students gain overseas or exchange student experience.
College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University draws on the latest ideas and models of world design and innovation disciplines, gathers outstanding talents of design practice, research, education management from all over the world, in order to cultivate innovative and inclusive value orientation, up-and-coming collaborative innovation style, capability of contributing to the society and aspirant college culture.

The mission of the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University is to meet the urgent need of world-class sustainable designing and innovating talents for technological, social, economic and environmental changes and for sustainable development. In particular, to meet the demand for high-level designing and innovating talents when China is turning from “Made in China” to “Created in China”, while Shanghai is promoting “transformational development driven by innovation”; to contribute to the creation of the second Centurial Glory of Tongji University in disciplinary development; to cultivate high-level designing and innovating talents in accordance with the pursuit of people-oriented, innovation-driven and sustainable development; to contribute to the prospect of developing Tongji University into a sustainability-oriented world-class university.
 
The Vision of the college:

College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University draws on the latest ideas and models of world design and innovation disciplines and gathers outstanding talents of design practice, design research, design management and design education management from all over the world in order to cultivate innovative and inclusive value orientation, up-and-coming collaborative innovation style, capability of contributing to the society and transparent and aspirant college culture.
The aim and feature of the College of Design and Innovation are to pursue academic excellence and contribute to social development. The overall goal is to establish an international, innovative, forward-looking and research-oriented world-class college of design with great sense of mission of the era, international perspective and native characteristics.


History:
College of Design and Innovation (D&I), Tongji University, was developed from the Art and Design Department of the College of Architecture at 2009, the design education at Tongji University began in the 1940s, the University was established in 1907. The college is committed to the mission of cultivating “sustainable designing and innovating” leading talents needed urgently by the new era. The overall goal of the college is to establish an international, innovative, forward-looking and research-oriented world-class college of design with great sense of mission of the era, international perspective and native characteristics.
 
International & Individual Collaboration
D&I has established partnerships with over 30 world-class design schools. The partnerships enable student exchange, faculty exchange, credit transfer, faculty training, collaborative practice, research projects, etc. D&I has also established strategic cooperative relationships with a variety of leading industries such as Autodesk, Microsoft, Intel, Alibaba, and Haier, in the form of joint research labs and joint research projects, with the aim of co-fostering design innovation talent with global vision and competency.
 
Programs & Figures
D&I has around 700 full-time students (BA, MA, PhD), 52 full-time faculty members, and 30 adjunct or visiting faculty members. More than 50 international students attend D&I every academic year—approximately 20% of the total number of graduate students. Over 60% of D&I’s master’s students gain overseas or exchange student experience.

Double-Degree Master’s Programs in cooperation with: Polytechnico di Milano, Italy;  Polytechnico di Torino, Italy; Aalto University, Finland; Bauhaus-University Weimer, Germany ; Köln International School of Design, Germany .
Double-Degree Doctoral Programs in cooperation with: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China; Swinburne University of Technology, Australia.


NoCC: New Center of Contemporary Jewellery and Design Culture
The New Centre of Contemporary Jewellery and Design Culture (NoCC) at the College of Design and Innovation (D&I) of Tongji University is an international think tank, the only of its kind in China, to unite the powerful resources of the university and the contemporary design and art community. It built on the scholarly and institutional resources of the D&I Tongji University, leads by Prof. SUN Jie. NoCC consists of Siping Space, Jewellery & Accessory Lab ( LAlab ), Jewellery & Glass Lab (JGlab, in cooperation with Shanghai Glass Museum ), MAX-XXXL Design Studio. NoCC not only contributes to Master’s programs and disciplines on contemporary Jewellery and Design, but also explores the practice, culture, industry and management of the jewellery from cultural, educational and research perspectives, develops creative leadership in the cultural entrepreneurs.
 
Cross disciplinary and collaboration programs such as “ HYPER DAILY 2016 Symposium ”, “ NoCC Co-Design Residence ”, “ NoCC Talk ” and “ NoCC + ” have been providing rich perspectives for our audiences for entering to contemporary jewellery field. NoCC has been invited cooperated with well-known artists and professions, such as: Johanna Dahm, Dinie Besems, Kim Buck, Liesbet Bussche, Leo Caballero, Alba Cappellieri, Pieter Elbers, Märta Mattsson, Hans Stofer, Jorunn Veiteberg, Thomas Aangeenbrug, Tatsuya Uemachi, Kengo Kito, and etc.
