Jane Adam, Thomas Hill
Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco presents new work by Jane Adam, who has been experimenting with anodized aluminum for 28 years, and Thomas Hill, whose new mixed media work incorporates experimentation with cut-out drawings, wood, wire, paint, and sheet metal, collaged into atmospheric "tableaux vivants.
Jane Adam
London-based Jane Adam has been experimenting with anodized aluminum for 28 years. Her innovative techniques of coloring aluminum incorporate immersion dyeing, block printing, stamping, painting, daubing, monotype and transfer printing. Her fascination with surface texture and subtle color variances enhances her graceful and simple forms. Adam's work is comfortably worn; she believes that a piece is incomplete without a relationship to the wearer and states, "When jewellery is not being worn, it may appear as an interesting object but its potential is unfulfilled." Adam is a Trustee of the British Craft Council, has been exhibited internationally including COLLECT in London and is in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum (London) and Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburg, PA). Adam's recent work expands upon her working process with the incorporation of silver and gold.
Thomas Hill
Thomas Hill's sculptural wire sketches capture the movements of animals in motion. Wire is manipulated to pull a three-dimensional form out of a two-dimensional sketch. Hill's new mixed media work incorporates experimentation with cut-out drawings, wood, wire, paint, and sheet metal, collaged into atmospheric "tableaux vivants." Hill states that the pieces are "like the pages of a picture book or an animated film." He will be showing these new cut out works as well as his wire work. Thomas Hill graduated from Middlesex University, London in 1994 where he was trained as a jeweler. He currently lives and works in San Francisco. Hill has exhibited at SOFA and participated in COLLECT at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and had a one-person show at the Fuller Craft Museum in Brockton, Massachusettes.
