Intro
Galerie Noel Guyomarc'h will be showcasing Canadian artist Paul McClure's most recent body of work. Continuing his explorations of forms and motifs from the microscopic universe of the human body, McClure takes his formal research a step further by integrating digital technologies, which he skilfully combines with analog fabrication.

Paul McClure
Paul McClure is a Canadian jewelry artist living and working in Toronto, Ontario. After receiving his BFA at NSCAD University in Halifax, he pursued his studies in Spain at the Escola Massana, Barcelona, and then at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland, where he received his Master degree in 1999. Since then, Paul McClure's work has been included in numerous exhibitions throughout North America, Europe and Asia, as well as in several private and public collections including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Canadian Museum of History, the Design Museum of Barcelona and the National Museum of Scotland. He has been teaching jewelry at George Brown College in Toronto for more than twenty years, and is currently head of the jewelry department. In addition to the many honours he has accumulated over the years, McClure was awarded the Governor General's Saidye Bronfman Award in 2015, Canada's highest distinction for fine crafts.

During a teaching sabbatical, which allowed him to focus entirely on the creation of a new body of work, Paul McClure spent four months at Birmingham City University, in the UK, to complete a research residency focusing on new technologies in the field of jewelry. This is when he began the work presented in the exhibition, a series of jewelry pieces combining manual and digital fabrication techniques. The rigorously contoured shapes of each object are reminiscent of his previous works, always inspired by the worlds of biology, genetics and pathologies. This time, however, McClure transports the viewer to a whole new scale with forms that are magnified and sliced open, thus revealing their structure, their inside. Not only does he allow himself to imagine the composition of each of these invented cells and bacteria, but he also exposes the nature of the digital processes employed. The slicing of each object reveals a network of colored walls, echoing computer-assisted design's principle of meshed solids and the successive layers of 3D printing. Contrasting with the outer wall of each shape, ranging from matt black to the deep grey of sterling silver, the colorful and visually appealing inner sections are both intriguing and disturbing.
