The 8th edition of the New Talents Award by Klimt02 aims to recognize the work of graduate students in our field by supporting their careers in the professional world. Nominated by our school members, one of the selected graduates will win the New Talents Award.
Drawing from architectural principles, such as three-dimensionality and construction, Lara Dheedene builds her metal jewellery pieces. Through their surprising scale, they challenge the wearer. Humans and their bodies are essential, wearability is played with and design is key.
Name of graduation student: Lara Dheedene.
Name of guiding teacher: Anneleen Swillen, Nedda El-Asmar, David Huycke, Maria Konschake, Lore Langendries, Audi Pauwels, Kitty Spaenjers, Ellen Vrijsen and Karen Wuytens.
Nominated by PXL-MAD School of Arts.
Lara Dheedene’s work as a 3BA student in Object & Jewelry at PXL-MAD emerged from a fascination for architectural principles and their translation into jewellery pieces. Scale plays a central role in her designs, resulting in bold pieces that stretch notions of wearability. Dangling between decoration and the sweet illusion of support, Lara’s fine silver constructions inhabit the wearer’s proximate surroundings, impacting how they experience both their own body as well as their environment. As a young designer that has just started her Master, Lara is elegantly carving her space within the contemporary jewellery field. Through her work, she builds a personal language, a distinct style, characterized by intuition and aesthetics.

Statement of the artist:
Lara Dheedene’s artistic project is inspired by formal investigations of architecture, a comparative study of jewellery practices from the 1980s and the theory of philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty who devoted himself to the complexity of perception and the body. Through her jewellery designs, Lara applies and explores the concept of the body scheme that Merleau-Ponty proposes in his phenomenological study. This body scheme becomes a personal research space that Lara feels challenged by to further explore and internalize. Drawing from architectural principles, such as three-dimensionality and construction, Lara builds her metal jewellery pieces. Through their surprising scale, they challenge the wearer. Humans and their bodies are essential, wearability is played with and design is key.
