The 8th edition of the New Talents Award by Klimt02 aims to recognize the work of graduate students in our field by supporting their careers in the professional world. Nominated by our school members, one of the selected graduates will win the New Talents Award.
These are amulets of positivity and energy with dynamic forms and colours that are fun to wear. These objects take the form of contemporary ritualistic tokens, commanding presence and inviting a visual conversation.
Name of graduation student: Lucy Pearl Petts
Name of guiding teacher: Silvia Weidenbach
Nominated by Glasgow School of Art.
Lucy Petts work embodies joy and pleasure in these turbulent times. The work is flamboyant and demands to be noticed. Vibrant colours are rendered in plant-based biodegradable materials. Statement by the artist:
My work is a response to the chaotic and alarming experiences faced by people living through the Anthropocene, such as the climate apocalypse, unjust governments and civil unrest. The collection Chaos attempts to bring a sense of joy and hope despite these hurdles, materialising in the form of amulets and tokens of luck. However, they could also be fittingly perceived as panic buttons for life. The pieces aim to initiate vital conversations of positive reform or provide comfort to the wearer with their inviting iridescent colours, alluring forms and hidden ornamentation.
The pieces are made from plant-based biodegradable 3D printed plastic adorned with marbled aluminium and small silver embellishments. I want the pieces to adorn the body on an oversized and large scale but without the heavy weight. I select materials to adhere to these forms and ideas, with wearable practicality considered.
My practice draws inspiration from both analogue and digital design methods alongside maximalist queer aesthetics. I create collages from magazines and articles inspired by world news events - these are distorted digitally to create a swirling chasm.
