In 2019, Talente, special show organized into the Handwerk & Design exhibition, presents works by 103 young artists, designers and craftsmen from 30 countries in 11 different fields. This year, works by participants from China, Estonia, Iran, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Romania and the Ukraine are among other countries present. Talente will show innovative, imaginative, extraordinary and very different works, especially in the fields of glass, ceramics and jewellery, as well as an unusually large number of interesting textiles and fashion designs. This focus fits this year perfectly with the theme of the neighbouring Exempla, which is dedicated to Textiles – fabrics of the future.
Talente presents a multitude of works dealing with material investigation and research. It is about the novel use of known materials or natural raw materials. As in the previous years, the use of recycled materials remains also an issue. However, the focus here is not on a pragmatic use, but rather on the alienation, the exploitation of the specific material qualities, the attractive colourfulness and surface effects. Another topic is the combination of new digital technologies and traditional craftsmanship. Based on the reflection on their respective characteristics unusual works with an innovative, attractive appearance are created. At the same time, a return to traditional techniques and craftsmanship of highest quality can be observed, which are transferred to the present and adapted to modern needs.
Other topics in the works shown at Talente include memory, nature, the environment, but also social issues such as Alzheimer's disease and the position of women in different societies and religions. The artistic examination of these questions documents the political-social awareness and commitment of the young artists and the importance of current discussions.
In the field of textiles, fashion designs ranging from wearable, sculptural to deconstructive are shown as well as tapestries, textile sculptures, weaving and fabric designs. Here, too, the spectrum reaches from traditional craftsmanship techniques to the inclusion of new technologies and uncommon combinations of materials, which lead to unusual visual and haptic effects.
This year, again a very large number of applications for the jewellery sector were received. An extremely exciting selection was made, encompassing many different positions. Works from recycled plastics, found objects, wood, concrete, feathers, quartz and metal will be exhibited. All these materials are elaborately worked on, creating attractive surface effects and forms of often poetic character. The focus is on a precise perception of material qualities and the beauty of the seemingly trivial and worthless. This year the number of large groups and installations is striking which allows to trace and compare the variations of basic shapes and different surface treatments or the effect of materials on the perception of form.
Talente 2019 can be visited from 13th to 17th March 2019 in hall B1 at the IHM (The International Crafts Fair) at the Fairground Munich. The price ceremony of the Talente-award by an international jury will take place on the 16th March on the stage in hall B1.
