Intro
The 8th edition of the New Talents Award by Klimt02 aims to recognize the work of graduate students in our field by supporting their careers in the professional world. Nominated by our school members, one of the selected graduates will win the New Talents Award.

You're standing in front of a never-ending bookshelf, and you can reach for any book. You can pick a book by its cover, by the thickness of the binding, or by the words written on the spine. You turn the book right side up. Upon opening the book to any page, you begin to examine its contents. What will the lines within reveal?
Name of graduation student: Taavi Teevet
Name of guiding teacher: Piret Hirv and Eve Margus

Nominated by Estonian Academy of Arts

The first meeting with Taavi Teevet started with the question - what drives you? The world endures through engagement, was the answer. In each new work there is a part of the previous one, just like a baker has in his bread the leavening of the previous loaf.

Consistency is the key word that describes Taavi's way of working. Repetitions, breaks and ramifications in terms of ideas, technologies and materials. A process that finds a form where necessary, but very often but often remains a way station.
This thesis did not happen overnight. It was a movement from one encounter and one story to another, until the author realised the connection between his own place and the choices he had made. The work took on a structure through the realisation that the librarian, the artist, the human being, is fallible and finite.

In the attempt to organise the world of knowledge and make sense of it, one has to orient oneself among the shelves, where every choice made is random and only leads to the next crossroads. Deciding which direction to take the train or which book to take from the shelf. Random encounters are what lead the author forward.
The author is always at the centre of the journey, everyone stands at a crossroads. The author creates possibilities through his work, the spectators add their own dimension, their own crossroads.

In his work, Taavi has come to a realisation that can be placed in the context of creative journeys, but also of searches in general. How do order, structure, insight and understanding emerge from disordered information? What influences it? What are the junctions, stations and signposts along the way?
Each of us stands at the centre of our own universe, and it is quite possible that somewhere our paths will cross.

/ Piret Hirv and Eve Margus

The statement of the artist:
At the crossroads in between the lines

You're standing in front of a never-ending bookshelf, and you can reach for any book. You can pick a book by its cover, by the thickness of the binding, or by the words written on the spine. You turn the book right side up. Upon opening the book to any page, you begin to examine its contents. What will the lines within reveal?

I've always wanted to understand the world: to try to understand what's going on around me, to understand how things work at different levels, and why they work. The impetus for this writing emanated from an incidental encounter with Jorge Luis Borges. In meeting Borges, I came to the realisation that for 26 years, I have been wandering within this "library" without having recognized the very fact of my existence.

The recent and serendipitous realisation that the universe may be construed as a library with its infinite possibilities of multiplicity residing at the core of my presence, has instilled in me a newfound perspective on reality. At the heart of the work is a search for structure and system: mapping the possible perceptions of the universe and the choices to be made at the crossroads of worlds, at the intersections of realms.

It is a journey into the depths of human consciousness, trying to formulate something that cannot be put into words, given that words that summarise what is experienced through neurological impulses have yet to be formulated.
This work brings together seemingly disparate entities into a single structure: the library, the workshop, and the railway station, whose common emotional component is the very question of being human: the understanding of existence.

Encounters with various individuals and their ideas constitute one of the inevitable components of this work. Interactions with fellow artists such as Jorge Luis Borges, Paolo Sorrentino, Laurie Anderson, and Jonathan & Christopher Nolan among others, have paved the way for novel avenues of thought, opened up a new direction of vision and movement, offered a point of reference and reassurance, and expressed with such precision feelings that I have not yet found my own words for.
