Intro
The 8th edition of the New Talents Award by Klimt02 aims to recognize the work of graduate students in our field by supporting their careers in the professional world. Nominated by our school members, one of the selected graduates will win the New Talents Award.

The underlying desire of Johansson is how wearers of her jewellery pieces may be strengthened by the agentive characteristics that she has drawn out from the natural materials that, incorporate smell, warmth, haptic, and magic. Her act of making ‘Hidden Treasures’ may resemble amulet making in the time when our society as a whole has been confronted with the pandemic.
Name of graduation student: Therese Johansson
Name of guiding teacher: Yuka Oyama

Nominated by HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design

A series of Therese Johansson’s ‘Hidden Treasures’ has stemmed from her deep aspiration to synthesize with natural materials that the artist has chosen to work with. The materials that are chosen for Johansson’s jewellery (except for silver) are sourced in the locale, where she lives. She has hand-picked them. They are a wide range of trees -apple tree, birch, oak wood- that grow in woods in West Sweden. She has then sought to transform their subtle ‘voices’ that are imbued in these wild entities.

In order to do so, Johansson has trained her multisensorial antennas through daily walking into the woods, translating nature’s life forces into gestural watercolour drawings, carefully studying contours and lines engrained in the specimens, and laboriously curving out their ‘wishes’. Next to the small-sized jewellery pieces, Johansson has also worked on larger-scaled wooden sculptures approx. 1 - 1.5 meters tall, where she could recognize nature’s life force even more dynamically.

The underlying desire of Johansson is how wearers of her jewellery pieces may be strengthened by the agentive characteristics that she has drawn out from the natural materials that, incorporate smell, warmth, haptic, and magic. Her act of making ‘Hidden Treasures’ may resemble amulet making in the time, where our society as a whole has been confronted with the corona pandemic. We are delighted to be able to nominate Johansson for Kilmt02!

The statement of the artist:
A lifelong communion with nature and the fir forest in particular has taught me to listen to a unique voice. In this communion, my artistry has its origins. An exploration of organic form, colour and structure where I work in dialogue with wood and silver. The hidden and concealed potentials of the materials together with my revelations, interpretations and insights about the shadowy, mysterious fir forests become the utmost source for my work.
Through the constant act of doing and touching the materials goes through layers of grinding, carving, forging and dyeing to get their identity. Jewellery and objects bind together body and mind and that invites curiosity to see the complexity of nature from a new perspective. Tender works that call for carrying, touch and reflection. A reminder of an elemental and emotional bond with material and the relationship to the earth.

'Hidden Treasures' consists of works in silver, birch and apple wood. Where there once were branches growing on the tree trunk something resembling mushrooms and strange shapes in silver are now growing out. Inside the bark of the apple, branches hide a lively pattern that is reinforced by firing. Mysterious and enigmatic with the common denominator that they are all necklaces that can be picked out from the tree trunk and threaded over and around the body. The placement of the jewellery stays in connection with the core of the body, close to the heart.
