Intro
I consider my jewellery as shadows of eternal forms and ideas. I create a personal interpretation from a universal given.
What's local and universal in your artistic work?
I consider my jewellery as shadows of eternal forms and ideas. I create a personal interpretation from a universal given.


What do you expect when you show your work to the public (for example, with an exhibition)?
I have noticed that depending on where or in which country I show my work I get diverse reactions. For example, in Scandinavia and Japan, the public gets easily connected with my creations.
Since 2010 I have an urban window in the heart of Brussels.  I love the way how I get in touch with my clients and receive direct feedback from my public. All of this inspires new ideas and enhances my collection.


How important is handmade for you in your development? What role does techniques and technology play in your development?
I am truly fascinated by traditional techniques as chasing, forging and enamelling. I like to use these in a novel way to bring about authentic designs. The physical properties are playing an important role in my creating process. Their boundaries and obstacles provide new challenges and ideas.


When you start making a new piece what is your process? How much of it is a pre formulated plan and how much do you let the material spontaneity lead you?
Anything can be an inspiration for me. I just need to look around, observe, let my imagination flow and start to connect shapes. The emotional impulses that inspire me to design, lead me straight to the precious metal and I let the material take the lead. I create by digging deeper and deeper into the properties of the material. So my creations can spontaneously occur at any moment while working.


Are there any other areas besides the jewels present in your work?
At first, I focussed on jewellery, but after a while, I turned to silversmithing as I found that my creativity expresses itself in objects and artefacts too.
Any idea I have even it’s an eggcup, cutlery, vessel or bowl drives me to realise it.


How important is wearability in contemporary jewellery? And in your pieces?
For me, wearability is a broad notion. In fact, you can wear everything. In my opinion, after creating an object or form it’s very important to determine where on the body it adds the most value.
A piece of jewellery that communicates on the ear won’t be necessary a good design for a ring or necklace. This reminds me of Christophe Coppens words as a hat designer. 
When you would like to make something in the glass, make a vase. Don’t bother people with a head in the glass
.


The last work, book, film, city that moved me was...
The Cloud Gate in Chicago made by Anish Kapoor is not the last artistic work that moved me but the one that impressed me the most.
The city I want to return to time after time is definitely Barcelona. I love to see the construction of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral progressing.


What/who is the biggest influence in your career?
The natural way of things.
On the one hand, like many artists, I’m easily influenced by the organic forms of nature.  
On the other hand, I create by using the physical properties of the precious metal like flexibility, rigidity and hardness.


Which piece or job gave you more satisfaction?
In recent years I have tended to explore the possibilities of folding silver. My Pik Nik cutlery set, which has a spoon, fork and knife fitting inside each other, is an example of this. Despite the dissonant shapes of the spoon, fork and knife I succeeded in creating a harmonious whole.


Considering the experiences you have had over the years - if you could go back and give yourself a piece of advice for the start-up phase, what would that be?
Keep on Track. This is a piece of advice given by Ruudt Peters during a workshop in his Ravenstein  Academy. In short, going your own way and stay true to your own personality and good feeling as a designer. It’s a challenge not being influenced by conventions and trends in the commercial world as well as in the art scene.

Personality: nature lover, stayer, unpretentious
Work: well thought through, balanced and organic
