In ancient China, both deities and fortune-telling masters could learn about the future and far-away things by "predicting through counting knuckles” (a predicting method in The Book of Changes, one famous Chinese classic masterpiece.). "Heavenly stems" and "earthly branches" were the two most commonly used rules in this process. By moving their fingers when predicting, ancients or faeries could easily match complex information such as "heavenly stems" , "earthly branches" and “eight Diagrams”, with the five elements(metal, wood, water, fire and earth, held by the ancients to compose the physical universe and later used in physiological and pathological phenomena).
