Of Shadows by Fumiko Gotô

Of Shadows

In his essay “In Praise of Shadows” (1933), Jun’ichiro Tanizaki illustrates the relationship between sensory perceptions, portraying the traditional Japanese sweet Yôkan to reveal how ambient darkness can enhance its savoury experiences. Inspired by this remark, I have created a work on the relationship between light and shadow.

This piece, which visually evokes the appearance of Yôkan, employs amber and buffalo horn. These organic materials symbolise the symbiotic relationship between Flora and Fauna, reflecting the harmony inherent in interconnected nature.

The inspiration from traditional Japanese sweets is integral to my creative journey. Drawing from their aesthetics, I began creating art jewellery after over three decades of practising architecture and design, merging these disciplines into a tactile and wearable form of art.
