The silent summer by Luca Sonnentag
Published: 12.05.2025
The Silent Summer by Luca Sonnentag has received the HOPEA COMPANY AWARD in the 33rd International Jewellery Competition, WOW Effect 2025. The choker features 14 extinct beetle species. Each is scientifically identifiable and inscribed with the year of its last recorded sighting.
ADORNING WHAT NO LONGER BREATHES
Every beetle is meticulously hand-drawn with graphite on enamel and kiln-fired at 800 °C.
The base structure was assembled from 92 hand-fabricated silver elements with 104 soldering points
The piece reflects on the ongoing sixth mass extinction in Earth's history. It emphasizes the crucial role insects play as the foundation of all ecosystems.
When they disappear, an irreversible chain reaction begins-ultimately silencing the world around us.
A double horizontal clasp, seamlessly integrated into the 15th oval element, secures the choker.
Its polished finish serves as a mirror, urging self-reflection in those accountable.
