The Weydon Ring by Sarah Reece

Ring  /  Organic

Unique piece

My work is focuses on flint; a common building material that people deem difficult to work with due to its hardness.
Flint is a type of chalcedony and certain types of chalcedony are revered across the world. Sadly, not our British flint which I think is highly underrated. My work shows ‘The Evolution of the Flint Ring’. I want to try and break down the current view of how flint is perceived in society and present it in a way that it should be seen. Flint has a rich history within our society that has long since been forgotten. Without it, our forefather’s may not have survived the Stone Age.
I want people to realise its beauty not just for its functionality but for it’s aesthetic.
This is a stone that should be celebrated and treasured. It can be found everywhere – on the little stony pathways around Farnham, buried in a shallow grave in a back garden. We walk past it or on it without ever really knowing that it is there. This ordinary stone that we take for granted is far from that. I see the extraordinary within the layers of stone and the magical depths that lie within.
I hope that you see it too…
