What comes to mind when you read the word “environment”? I picture a dense forest of ancient trees—what I imagined while reading Elizabeth Essner and Cindi Strauss’s description of the route to Dorothea Prühl’s rural studio. Maybe for you environment conjures a different natural setting, such as where water meets land—like in Rachel Reichert’s article on Mary Nohl’s lakeshore cottage, where Nohl’s creations spill forth into the surrounding landscape.

For some, the most immediate association may be about sustainability and the “urban mining” interventions Sofie Boons describes in Findings. But an environment is also something that can be cultivated, such as the jewelry business and gallery space Viviana Langhoff describes in her conversation with Olivia Shih, the pairings of jewelry and bespoke boxes in LOOK, and the craft holdings in the museums in Victoria, Australia, that the group in Collect is committed to increasing.

In this issue, environment is an expansive term with broad definitions and interpretations. It encompasses contexts like Ja’Hari Ortega situating bamboo door knockers within the realm of public art, and Jessica Calderwood highlighting personal and collective memories of recent immigrants in her community-engaged enamel project. It also contains the social phenomena and technological developments that have given rise to “Gloopy” jewelry aesthetics, as traced by Rebecca Schena.

In a digital context environment can mean “an interface”—the kind of space that Maja Stojkovska’s Voice & Vision contributions disrupt by offering a retreat from the attention economy. And for the latest addition of the ongoing editorial residency, the three artists in CRUCIBLE created an intentional space (via Zoom) to collaborate on associative automatic writing from their respective homes across the globe.

I hope that whatever environment you find yourself in, the contents of this issue will broaden your horizons.
