Intro
The delicate silk work of Shu embroidery is as precious as gemstones. I decided to set it, gem-like, into a silver bezel. In this series, I also incorporate two animal elements from traditional Chinese painting: the swallow, symbolizing a new start, and the Koi fish, which symbolizes good luck.

Vilya Ou
Vilya Ou received her B.F.A, Major in Jewellery Design and Metalsmithing, from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, NS. She is a gemmologist (Gemmology Institute of America) and recently won the 2016 GIA Scholarship Award. She is a co-winner of the gallery’s 11th National Jewellery Student Competition in 2014.

I was born and raised in Sichuan (Szechwan), a province in southwest of China. In ancient China Sichuan is abbreviated as Shu.  Famous in China for many reasons, Sichuan was best known for its embroidery.

Shu embroidery is a remarkable traditional technique which can be traced back to 200 BC. Popular for thousands of years, Emperors and nobles were particularly fond of this marvelous art, adorning their dragon robes and court dresses with Shu embroidery.

My great-grandmother was a pattern designer in the embroidery studios of Chengdu, Sichuan.  Today, where pop culture is the major fashion, the tradition is in danger of being abandoned.

I combine these two elements with simple geometric shapes to give the jewelry pieces a contemporary and dashing look.

I try to make my work elegant and playful. As an artist from Sichuan, I hope my work presents our Shu embroidery well. / Vilya Ou
