Intro
On the occasion of the contemporary jewelry biennial “Orizzonti d’Autore” curated by Thereza Pedrosa at the Civic Museum of Asolo, Italy, from May 7 to July 24, 2022, goldsmith artist Giovanni Corvaja recounts his story, his work, his obsession with gold and how he came to overcome the known limits of this material that has fascinated humanity for millennia.

The relationship with the past and the instinctive desire to overcome it is revealed in all of its power in the work of Giovanni Corvaja. An artistic, formal and at the same time technical research has always been a philosophy of life for Corvaja, for whom the exploration of gold and its potential is a true mission. At the beginning of the '90s the artist developed a system that allowed him to reduce gold and platinum to the size of a fifth of a human hair, in fibers incredibly soft to touch. This technical development together with his studies on Alchemy, which often lead him to meet the Golden Fleece as a metaphor for the Philosopher's Stone, triggered in Corvaja a desire to actually pursue the Golden Fleece. The search involved the resolution of countless technical difficulties for the creation of the Golden Fleece itself. As a testimony of this life journey, of the confrontation with the myths of the past and of overcoming the limits of modern techniques, we have the five works of the Golden Fleece collection. Each piece required thousands of hours of work and hundreds of kilometers of gold wire. For example, for the realization of the bracelet alone, the artist spent 1300 hours of work and used 28 km of self-produced gold wire. The bracelet is composed of 1,241,856 strands of fine gold and 4,000 granules of platinum.

Limits are conventions we set for ourselves. Curiosity about the new has led Giovanni Corvaja to explore the limits of his favorite materials: gold and platinum. During this conference, Corvaja will take us on his exploratory journey where new forms of matter translate into new forms of art. The myth lives by its absence and Corvaja wants to dispel some myths by making them tangible. Here's how!

The conference “Beyond the Limits | Giovanni Corvaja” will take place at the Sala Consiliare in the City Hall of Asolo on June 18, 2022 at 15.00.
