The unexplained and unpredictable material become the mirror of her thoughts. She is carefully listening to the voices of her materials. When bringing out the different sides of the minerals she uncovers not only some of their hidden characters but also her own, and maybe even the personality of the viewer.
Traditionally a cameo is a portrait carved in stone or shells. In Sara Gackowska's work, each oval cameo is fractured, creating a condensed picture of sublime ruin instead. The use of blood-like iron oxide creates a connection to human frailty.
Hematite is an iron oxide that, in some variations, has a blood coloured pigment used for example in Falu rödfärg - red paint traditionally used for traditional Swedish wood houses. In Sara Gackowska’s pieces, you will discover many of these materials different faces.
