KwANT is the new exhibition at the heritage centre de Domijnen in Sittard. It shows a selection of its lace collection together with designs by contemporary designers, including duo Wonder. The designers took a close look at some lace objects and created new work inspired by an object or a detail of an object.
Duo Wonder's research resulted in lace-like double-sided necklaces composed of the techniques of embroidery and 3D printing. Duo Wonder (Sofie and Katja) set to work with a small piece of lace incorporated into a showpiece scroll and lace under-sleeves.
duo Wonder's signature starts from the alphabetisation of the pattern reflected in the long sampler (showpiece scroll). The ornamental pattern was playfully broken down into an alphabet of sub-elements, supplemented by parametric variants of these shapes. From this alphabet of shapes, they played with graphic gradients and the layering of materials and techniques. A play emerged between 2D and 3D, where circular elements transformed into spherical forms, based on the optical effect of embroidery patterns or applied reliefs in printing.
From the lace strokes, the ornamental réseaus, and plaited patterns, Sofie and Katja drew graphic inspiration for the open and closed fill patterns of embroidery, 3d-printed structures, and textures. In turn, the undersleeves inspired them to work with different -shifted- layers in shaping the designs.
