Interestingly enough this embodies the challenge Dashilar faces. This district has a rich history of traditional crafts. Yet the modern contemporary world is knocking at its gates, which will surely lead to interesting interconnections between traditional crafts and contemporary design.
Zhang Fan is researching the traditional Chinese goldsmithing crafts. She uses Chinese filigree technique to express modern concepts of beauty. Tricia Tang will show pieces of several different collections she made. Her designs consist of seals, ink, jade and calligraphy, which she uses in an unexpected and powerful way. Amal Yung-huei Chao creates jewellery installations. She is inspired by the organic and colourful growths of buildings over time.

Beijing Design Week 2012 marks the soft launch of Ubi Gallery. Ubi is a new design space in Beijing, in one of the historical buildings of Dashilar, showcasing jewellery design and ceramics from both European and Chinese designers.
During the Beijing Design Week Ubi is located in a charming building on the busy Dashilar Xilu. After a huge renovation later this year, its permanent location on 9 Zhujia Hutong will be ready to show the complete collection to the public.
At Ubi Gallery creative designs in jewellery and high quality pieces of contemporary ceramics are on display. Next to small series of work of European designers you will also find the best collection of Asian jewellery artists; such as the work of Jie Sun, Noon Passama, Wei-Hsuan Chang, Carissa Hsu and Li Liang. Ubi Gallery will exhibit new work every 2 months.
