Alexander Blank
Over the years, representations of animal heads and cartoon characters have become the trademark of Alexander Blank (*1975). His Memento Juniori pendants, crafted from hand-carved solid foam, silver and cotton, reveal that he likes to be carried away into fantasy worlds and allows himself to be inspired by his curiosity about the unknown. The exhibition titled Companions also shows recent creations by this jewellery artist that are characterized by their materials’ compelling aesthetics.

For Alexander Blank, creating jewellery is a way of reflecting upon people, exploring perspectives beyond the traditional, and telling stories. The pieces displayed in the Companions exhibition, including recently created ones, are characterized by their materials’ compelling aesthetics. Combining shapes and colours to form abstract pictures for the wearer’s body, the jewellery artist’s creations represent a visual mirror of his lifeworld. The smooth surfaces of the objects conceal the actual crafting process involved, i.e. that Alexander Blank works like a sculptor, and many of his pieces have been carved from the material.

The Companions exhibition was previously on view at the German Goldsmiths’ House in Hanau. In 2023, the jewellery artist was also the 10th goldsmith-in-residence in Hanau. Within the context of the presentation titled “Hand-selected by Sam Tho Duong” during ORNAMENTA 2024, some of Alexander Blank’s creations were already on display at the Jewellery Museum, piquing an interest in his broad spectrum.

Katja Poljanac has curated the exhibition in collaboration with Alexander Blank under the overall supervision of Friederike Zobel, the Museum’s director.
