Artisans have always strived to deepen humanity’s connection to the natural world. Through a love of material, by preserving time-honoured techniques, and transforming invaluable wisdom into physical form, the world’s craftspeople harness creativity, build culture, but also fortify our bond to the elements.
The fifth edition of the LOEWE FOUNDATION Craft Prize presents a thought-provoking selection of works that infuse contemporary updates into a centuries-old tradition. Many of this year’s 30 finalists demonstrate a deep understanding of their materials, often inventing novel processes that infuse surprising layers of innovation into their practice and pieces.
Chosen by a panel of experts from over 3,100 submissions by artisans representing 116 countries and regions, the finalists represent 15 countries and regions and work across a list of mediums including ceramics, woodwork, textiles, leather, basketry, glass, metal, jewellery, and lacquer.
The annual prize was launched by the LOEWE FOUNDATION in 2016 to celebrate excellence, artistic merit, and newness in modern craftsmanship. Conceived by creative director Jonathan Anderson, the award aims to acknowledge the importance of craft in today’s culture while paying tribute to LOEWE’s beginnings as a collective craft workshop in 1846.
Each finalist goes much further than mastering ancient techniques or timeless materials. Ideas, emotions, and universal knowledge are all imbued into each work; giving audiences pause for thought, and reflection, while also birthing new perspectives.
With so much change gripping the world, LOEWE continues to recognise and honour working artists, because their talent, vision and resolve to innovate continue to set new standards, especially as we collectively look at the world anew.
Digital exhibition
Accompanying the physical exhibition at The Seoul Museum of Craft Art (SeMoCA), this digital exhibition reflects LOEWE’s ongoing search for solutions that place sustainability at the forefront—designed in native dark mode, it reduces digital strain, saves energy, and draws focus to the artworks.
Further exploring our dedication to creativity in all forms and disciplines, the LOEWE FOUNDATION has invited six authors to write a response to the 30 shortlisted works, highlighting their design, craftsmanship, and intrinsic beauty with short texts that are insightful, humorous, and poetic.
