It is an exploration of transition and transformation, viewed through three very different lenses - an exhibition that reveals the one universal constant: change. Through the work of three contemporary Canadian jewellery artists - Petra Luz, Lynn Légaré and Caroline Rivière, this exhibition gives a personal and intimate glance into the transitions that affect us all.
Artist list
Petra Luz, Lynn Légaré, Caroline Rivière
Petra Luz’s work approaches the theme of change differently, inspired by the transformational effects brought on by shifting seasons, specifically during autumn. As a bridge between warm summer months and a harsh winter landscape, Petra’s latest collection is a juxtaposition of organic, abstracted forms against rigid, geometric shapes.
It is a play between organic and geometric shapes. Stone splinters and river stones set in silver and gold contrasting with fine gemstones; an evolution from rough and unfinished to smooth, polished and faceted. Together with some colour, the circle of life is mimicked in my designs.
/ Petra Luz
Petra’s work has always explored the ways in which balance can be negotiated through contrast, and with this latest collection, her work represents the fine line that separates two halves of a perfect whole.
Lynn Légaré is a Montreal-based artist and professor at L’École de Joaillerie de Montréal whose work has been exhibited in many prestigious international exhibitions, including SOFA in New York and Chicago. A well-known and respected contemporary Canadian artist, Lynn’s work is defined by elaborate detail – voluminous, one of a kind pieces that command attention both for its scale and complexity. Her latest collection however, Axel-bis, is a strong departure from her previous artistic practice - a challenge set by the artist to think and create differently.
I specifically chose to refine my style, drawing inspiration from the origins of the minimalist movement… For over 30 years, I have based my practice solely on the creation and fabrication of unique pieces for exhibition purposes and for my private customers. This new way of working and thinking marks quite a metamorphosis in the approach I take to my work.
/ Lynn Légaré
Axel-bis is exhibited alongside her previous work - namely Enchaînons les sujets (Let's Link Subjects), Tissons des liens (Let's Weave Links), and Corrélation (Correlation), and together the collection offers a glimpse into the artist’s decades long creative journey, begging the question: should we not instigate, or at the very least embrace change? Lynn Légaré’s newest collection is a refusal to remain in comfortable and safe waters, and instead plunge head-first into uncharted territories.
Caroline Rivière is an artist now based in Quebec, but originally hails from the South Pacific island of New Caledonia. Leaving behind the ocean she loved for the forests she now calls home, Caroline finds comfort in the similarities she has found and the small connections that tie these two places together.
My collection joins both the marine world and the forests from Quebec. It illustrates very well the transition that I experienced 10 years ago. Moving from a life in the tropical islands of the Pacific, to a life in this great cold country. This period marks my own metamorphosis: the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
/ Caroline Rivière
Through her latest collection, Caroline searches for common ground in two drastically different landscapes, and finds them in the shared aesthetic quality of ocean coral and forest lichen, both of which serve as reminders of where she came from, and the journey she has travelled to become the person she is now.
Thank you to these three artists not only for sharing their work with us, but also for inviting us along on their creative journeys through metamorphosis. Their work stands as a reminder of how temporary and fleeting our present experiences always are - a reminder that we are creatures that, like fallen leaves, are forever at the whim of the winds of change.
