Intro
This will be the second solo exhibition of Ms. Zhao Yi with The Closer Gallery. I’m so glad that she’s coming back for our three-year appointment with her new work. In the spring of 2019, when I stepped into her studio seeing her desktop covered with dazzling works, I once exclaimed that it would be the most touching exhibition of that year. When I met her again in the autumn of 2022, nothing has changed. / Xiao Liang

Yi Zhao
The three years of preparation have made us know each other better. She often joked that her works were not mainstream, more like something for fun. But in the past three years, she has never shown any sign of creating something mainstream. Instead, she keeps her own pace so persistently. As an artist, Zhao Yi doesn’t really need to share too many details about her creation, but she has no intention to keep it secret. She confessed to me that some materials she used in her work were leftovers by others or wastes to be thrown away, and the shape of the work was obtained coincidentally rather than designed as planned. When we suddenly hear such narration in our first encounter with a piece of work, it might be a little bit disappointing. Usually, the audience may ask “Shouldn’t those delicate parts be carefully designed?” “Do you mean it is a work born from randomness rather than from a sophisticated design to fulfil or convey a concept?”… However, after listening to her narration many times, I have gradually understood that Zhao Yi’s creation was shaped by day-to-day manual work. Compared with the principle of 'conception first', she relies more on the operation of handwork to open the tentacles of her senses to drive her inspiration. On such a basis, she would make seemingly casual judgments and choices about every detail of the work. The so-called 'finishing touches' have already been fused into her ordinary creation process. She doesn’t need to wait for the flash of inspiration, as each fragment is an indispensable part and each inch of time is a fleeting and valuable opportunity.

The works in the series to be exhibited are both interrelated with and independent of each other, which is largely because they were born in a very special period of time (under the epidemic). The workshop of the school was often locked down unexpectedly due to epidemic prevention, leading to interruption to her ongoing creation. Whether for the creation or personal life, the space that can be freely controlled has been compressed into a narrow space. Zhao Yi called such a dilemma a 'narrow road'. She has been encountering obstacles from time to time on this narrow road, which virtually adds unexpected contingency to her work. What will be the consequence when an accident occurs and collides with the planned things? Zhao Yi will give us the answer in her exhibition.
