Intro
The concepts underlying these artists’ work and the Estonian School where they studied are the attainment of an aesthetical utopia that rescues the artistic product from the banality of the everyday, the bestowal of a sacred, timeless dimension that is highly symbolic of the object created, the use of different materials, organic and inorganic, and rich in meaning...

ÕHULOSS
CASTLE IN THE AIR / ÕHULOSS is a group of 6 jewellery artists from Estonia: Kadri Mälk, Eve Margus-Villems, Kristiina Laurits, Piret Hirv, Tanel Veenre & Villu Plink.

Formed in 1999, the group has since exhibited their works jointly in Estonia, Holland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Portugal, Hungary, France, Israel & China.

The concepts underlying these artists’ work and the Estonian School where they studied are the attainment of an aesthetical utopia that rescues the artistic product from the banality of the everyday, the bestowal of a sacred, timeless dimension that is highly symbolic of the object created, the use of different materials, organic and inorganic, and rich in meaning, almost as if evoking an animist conception of the surrounding nature that has never been placated; even when not manifested, it is the latter that is the most profound motive of inspiration.

The jewellery is regarded as a unique piece, the product of a thought and idea, the result of an “intellectual sovereignty” that exceeds any other meaning and emphasises the archetypical value of a magic, symbolic object; if it is to be such, artistic jewellery must therefore be the fruit of a precise conceptual path, demanding great intellectual qualities from its author. Knowledge and rationality are not, however, the true prerequisites to be able to create but rather intuition and a mind that is free of prejudice and conditioning, and an independent spirit that is open to imagination and fantasy.
