We look back on an inspiring Munich Jewellery Week last week, so we are happy to announce our next event. On Tuesday 8 April, our new Artist-In-Residence, Corrina Goutos, will give a lecture at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, followed by a Meet & Greet.
Artist list
Célio Braga, Corrina Goutos
Corrina Goutos (1991) works with jewellery, objects, and installation and is currently based in Hamburg, Germany. Having coined the term "Anthrosmithing" to describe her interdisciplinary practice- Corrina renounces the concept of a "raw material", instead considering that when a craftsperson imprints themselves on a material, they are but one of many agents constantly reshaping it. Precise pre-industrial handicraft is applied to post-consumer detritus, to elevate them with the craftsmanship she learned as a goldsmith. She uses, amongst other things, e-waste in her designs, such as old earbuds, cell phones and laptops. Pre-industrial craftsmanship thus mixes with obsolete mass-produced items, challenging modern value systems at a time when revaluation is more urgent than ever.
Célio Braga (1963) is a multidisciplinary artist whose career has been marked by his ability to redefine and to expand conventional categories such as photography, painting, drawing, textiles and sculpture, making reference to a broad spectrum of visual language and traditions of making.
He experiments with different media and pushes them to the limit through successive construction techniques. These time-consuming processes of making include, collage, perforation, layering, mending, stitching, embroidery and weaving, coalescing in a constant process of construction, destruction and reconstruction.
Programme:
15:30 – 15:45: Introduction by Jeannette Jansen and Astrid Ubbink (board Françoise van den Bosch Foundation).
15:45 – 17:00: In Dialogue: Corrina Goutos and Célio Braga.
17:00 - 18:30: Meet & Greet and closing drink.
Location:
Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Fred. Roeskestraat 96, 1076 ED Amsterdam.
