NEUMEISTER is offering a remarkable treasure trove of historical jewelry in its December auction. The collection comprises over 200 items in total, many of which come from princely possessions.
A highlight of the consignment is a rock crystal petshaft, a kind of seal made of hard material, from the Danish royal family. It was created by Fabergé around 1900 and was demonstrably owned by the Danish Prince Axel (1888 - 1964) and his son Georg (1920 - 1986).
Prince Axel Christian Georg of Denmark was the second-born son of Prince Valdemar of Denmark and the French Princess Marie d'Orleans. In May 1919, Prince Axel married Princess Margaretha of Sweden (1899 - 1977). Their first-born son was Prince Georg Valdemar Carl Axel, who married Anne Ferelith Fenella Bowes-Lyon (1917 - 1980) on September 16, 1950. She was a first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II through her father.
The initials H.P. are engraved in Fraktur script on the seal plate of the mushroom-shaped seal. They stand for “Hans kongelige hojhed prins”, which translates as “His Royal Highness Prince”. This means that this seal is not personalized and can therefore be passed on within the family.
Other pieces of Fabergé jewelry in the consignment also come from princely possessions. For example, a brooch with sapphire, ruby and diamonds, which was created in St. Petersburg around 1900 in the workshop of Fabergé master August Wilhelm Holmström.
The treasure also includes numerous parures, i.e. jewelry combinations whose individual parts are coordinated in terms of design and choice of material. It is particularly pleasing that NEUMEISTER is able to offer almost completely preserved parures as well as (even rarer) matching original cases (see below). Friends of historical jewelry will be delighted by the parure with carnelians and chalcedony, which was made in France around 1830 - 1840, and a parure with a necklace, a pair of drop earrings, three brooches and two bracelet clasps with shell cameos, probably made in Italy around 1860.
