Intro
Alexander Blank is teaching a five week class/workshop this winter at RISD: Cartoons, Mangas, Movies, Science Fiction are very contemporary sources in creative practice, such as literature, philosophy, music, etc or any other cultural elements. This cultural element is seriously discussed in a broad range, not only by nerdy people as it used to be.
Imagine a chosen person, privileged with all kinds of super powers.
Just as Superman or any other cartoon-, manga-, comic hero or villain.
Feel how it must be when the energy starts to sizzle in his/her hands just before something magical happens.
Anything that can be done is possible!
...but still, with all these powers they need an outfit, a home, things they disire .
Something that represents the hero/villain with its special style, that expresses their special abilities or their extraordinary taste.

Try to imagine a hero character that you would feel honoured to make a design for.

Cartoons, Mangas, Movies, Science Fiction are very contemporary sources in creative practice, such as literature, philosophy, music, etc or any other cultural elements.
This cultural element is seriously discussed in a broad range, not only by nerdy people as it used to be.
Gernerations are growing up with this as part of their culture and it could also be seen in their designs.
It will be very interesting how the outcome is going to look like and where the qualities will be setteled.

Shortly the achievments for the students

- developing a specific expression with material selection.
- The workshop „Get cape. Wear cape. Fly.“ seeks to encourage the students to use uncommon sources for designing contemporary pieces.
- Results will be achieved through a playful way of developing an idea for a workshop relevant piece.
- Not only to focus on the end result or a finished piece, instead more
focus on exploring, experimenting and playing with concepts, material and form.
- Gaining a better understanding of what contemporary could mean in contemporary jewellery/design/art/etc.
