The workshop focuses on the process of ‘anticlastic forming’, where fluid, dynamic surfaces are achieved by stretching the peripheral areas of a sheet metal surface. Participants can work at any scale from jewellery size to about half a meter in diameter.
The workshop focuses on the process of ‘anticlastic forming’, where fluid, dynamic surfaces are achieved by stretching the peripheral areas of a sheet metal surface. The guiding principle is to follow the metal’s inherent tensile properties, without starting with a fixed idea of a finished form. Participants can work at any scale from jewellery size to about half a meter in diameter.
To those interested in a more technical design approach using CAD, I will offer a detailed overview of tools in 'Rhino' that can assist at the design stage and in the practical realisation, to develop templates or analyse curvature in a form.
Benjamin Storch has carried out extensive research on the subject (PhD, School of Jewellery, Birmingham) and is currently applying the processes to create large sculptural works for private and public spaces. The workshop is held in a beautiful location and there is still room for participants to stay at the Villa.
The workshop is limited to six participants.
Besides patience and perseverance in the hammering process, the workshop does not rely on any previous experience.
The workshop will generally be held in English, but Benjamin is fluent in French and German as well.
