A workshop focusing on how to fasten the brooch and the importance of paying attention to the whole object, not only the front.
Even though contemporary jewelry is a 3 dimensional media, the main source of communicating contemporary jewelry is through digital channels - internet, social media etc. All of these picturing the jewelry 2 dimensionally.  As makers we need to focus on the whole jewelry piece, not only what the viewer sees but also on what the owner and wearer sees, feels and relates to. This relationship between object and wearer is what makes jewelry unique compared to other form of artistic expressions.
The workshop will start with a short lecture about the work of Kim Buck focusing on the physical mechanisms of wearing jewelry on the body. Secondly a short lecture about the history of the western brooch.
Main part of the workshop will be small themes focusing on the way the brooch is fastened to the body. Each student will make several brooches during the workshop with different approaches to fastening the brooch focusing on personal expression and methods.
