Don't lose heart! by Barbara Schrobenhauser 2016
Published: 11.05.2016

By nature, the making process offers surprising, coincidental, irrational, value-free possibilities that the mind cannot predict, imagine or couldn`t admit. Based on some exercises we will generate tests, combinations , layerings and aesthetics. We will use classical and not conventional materials and techniques of jewellery making. Materials and techniques, both traditional and new, carry a wealth of information; changing cultural, historical, and sensorial references, which we try to talk about.
How this challenge is then applied in creative terms is the central theme. The aim of the course is to create a piece of jewellery, or a series of pieces, by the end of the Summer Academy. The process of working artistically with one's hands opens up many surprising, irrational and coincidental possibilities which cannot be calculated or constructed in advance. Tasks give rise to material tests and combinations, to the building of layers and aesthetics. The course looks at both traditional and unconventional materials employed by goldsmiths. The resulting work will be examined through group discussions and one on one tutorials referencing the broader historical and cultural context.
In order that participants achieve a result of genuine personal value, we would recommend booking for the full two weeks. Each participant is invited to bring their own materials.
