Enamelling involves applying a coloured powder or glass paste to a metal or ceramic surface. Once fired in a kiln, the glass melts and forms a vibrant and glossy layer. Various techniques exist, such as window enamel, champlevé, basse taille, and ronde bosse enamel. This workshop focuses on enamel des peintres (enamel painting) and cloisonné enamel. Read more about these techniques below.

What you’ll learn:
There is a workshop for beginners (2 days) and one for those with a basic knowledge of jewellery techniques (2 or 4 days). The enamel painting (email des peintres) workshop introduces you to the basics of enamelling. You’ll explore different ways to use enamel powder, both dry and wet, on copper by sprinkling, stencilling or painting. You’ll mix finely ground enamel powder with oil or water and apply it to the metal. After firing at high temperatures, the design fuses with the surface. This technique combines painting and enamelling producing vibrant and detailed creations.

In the workshop enamel cloisonné you use thin metal wires to create tiny compartments (cloisons) on a silver surface. These compartments are partially filled with enamel, fired in the kiln and then layered with more enamel in successive firings. This slow but rewarding process results in highly refined and colourful designs.
