(...) For me, the most powerful work can be returned to again and again; in each encounter something different is revealed. The narrative behind a piece should be kept as a fine secret – as a reference point by which to measure or assess the work. (...)
Please be afraid of being understood
(Don’t be afraid of being misunderstood)
Immediately understanding Art/work is an insult to the maker.
If work is understood but not felt, if the engagement with an artwork ends at the point where the viewer has boxed in its meaning or content, the work’s lifespan is over.
The hidden narrative should never be illustrated, but rather feed and nurture the process as an ongoing encounter with the work - it cannot serve to illustrate a notion, feeling, or event - but should be an event in itself.
For me, the most powerful work can be returned to again and again; in each encounter something different is revealed. The narrative behind a piece should be kept as a fine secret – as a reference point by which to measure or assess the work.
The desire to be understood is stronger than we think.
How to avoid clichés if we cannot identify them in the first place?
How to trust the embedded meaning of objects?
How to believe in the power of the ordinary?
This workshop aims to search for the fine line between illustrative narration and personal abstraction.
