Jewellery designer Ted Noten has won great fame internationally with his unique, idiosyncratic and often contrary approach of the jewellery profession. Noten’s projects are never introspective; they always reach out to the people he gets involved: the wearers of his jewellery, the users of his objects, and the spectators of his installations.
This approach to the jewellery profession makes Noten more than a great designer; he is also a great teacher. Every summer, Atelier Ted Noten offers people an opportunity to become acquainted with the ATN method and philosophy.
During an intensive course week, the participants will go in search of themselves, in search of their own idiocies, fascinations and talents. Based on these explorations they will create their own ‘Conversation Pieces’, under the inspiring leadership of Ted Noten and his fellow designers, including Marcel van Kan. Every object will be a testimony to the designer’s personality, and every object will provoke an exciting dialogue with the others. The final results will be presented through a special website that the participants can use as a platform to present themselves for one year after the course.
The Workshop
How to distinguish yourself as a maker in a complex world where old platforms exist alongside new ones, where galleries exist alongside open source systems, museums alongside social media? To begin with, you have to find out who you are. What are your talents? And which of your interests spark your creative work? These interests need not be related to the jewellery profession. Are you a business talent who likes to brand jewellery design? Then exchange your knowledge with others. Are you a wonderful cook who loves to experiment with different ingredients? Then use this in your work! Are you into techno, or are you more interested in classical music? Discover how you can translate this into jewellery, for instance using new media such as vimeo applications, augmented reality or smartphone applications. There is no need to shy away from anything. Very often the most exciting results are conceived on the cutting edge between opposing character traits.
In a series of short assignments you will get to know your limitations, only to leave them behind again immediately. The motto for our Summer School is: STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH!
