KORU2, International Contemporary Jewellery, took place in Lappeenranta, Finland in June 2006. It included an exhibition of 35 European and Japanese artists showing significant new works, five workshops that focus on contemporary approaches to jewellery, and a programme of talks.

International Contemporary Jewellery

Following KORU 1 in 2003, the aim of KORU2 is to further establish this series of international events on contemporary jewellery in Lappeenranta, that encourages creativity and brings together professionals (artists, curators, arts administrators, collectors and professors) and students.

The KORU2 event coincides with the World Crafts Council – Europe’s General Assembly, which is to be held in Lappeenranta this year and which will be hosted by Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo. For this occasion,Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo is organising a special exhibition of Finnish metal art and craft, called “On the border”. Ornamo is working closely with KORU 2 in the production of the symposium and workshops.

KORU2 is organised by the South Carelia Polytechnic, Arts Council of Southeast Finland and the South Karelia Art Museum.

* Collecting as an activity prior to the making, collecting materials / sources of inspiration

* The nature of a collection as an outcome of the making process; working with groups of objects that are somehow connected.

Through a series of exercises and questions participants will explored the possibilities of collecting as a starting point for a working method. It will be explored variety and diversity, but also similarity as a way to achieve a link between a group of things. By means of sketching in diverse materials we will take the theme of the collection through various stages of translation and transformation. Each stage will be documented in a suitable way, according to the nature of the specific collection.

Which visual means are there to establish connections between different objects? How can you translate existing methods of selection, arrangement, classification, presentation from other disciplines or from daily life into your own work?

If our jewellery could speak, what would it say?

We know jewellery to be a vehicle for personal expression; designed, made, and used to express artistic thought, status in society, belief, wealth, fashion trends, customs and rituals etc. But despite these different prior forms of ‘designed expression', all jewellery has in common a propensity for a secret life: the capacity to hold personal, unique meaning that ultimately defines the piece.

By wearing, owning and interacting with jewellery, we breathe life into it. We activate it and set it on a life-long journey to collect and absorb its surroundings – eventually becoming a unique piece even if it started out as one of a thousand other identical items.

In this workshop we will consider how a piece of jewellery becomes unique, the transition from anonymous object to unique personal belonging, how we define ‘unique', how meaning is attached and changed, how ‘value' is added and how these thoughts can be deliberately expressed into an ‘anonymous jewellery blank' to start it on its journey as a sign of life.

The workshop's aim is to give a new life to traditional cameo.
Cameos have their origins in seals, which were already made over 7000 years ago in ancient Middle East . First known cameos are from Alexandria , from 2nd century BC. We know our grandmother's portrait cameos best, but in other times the subjects have been various from gods and goddesses in Ancient Greek to philosophers and political subjects in Hellenistic Rome.
Reflecting on what it has been in the past, participants will search the meaning of cameo today. What it has been? Is there any significance left? What it could be? What is your cameo? With new materials and ways of working, participants will create a new tradition in cameos. Materials are not limited, using stone is also possible.

Practice of nunome zougan (texture inlay) as the main theme, with introduction to various zougan (inlay) techniques and colouring technique of different kinds of metal such as shibuichi (an alloy of copper and silver) and shakudou (an alloy of copper and gold)
The class include making tools, designing and making the inlayed metals, though to finishing and polishing.

Once upon a time fashion designers, stylists, journalists and other 'professional experts' set rules about how the different components of appearance - garments, jewellery, accessories, hairstyle, make-up, etc. - should be 'co-ordinated. Today's creative consumer, however, wants to sample & mix his or her own 'style statement' - often deliberately juxtaposing what would previously have been seen as contradictory and clashing styles. This new freedom (and responsibility) for the consumer reflects a more individual and less conformist approach to appearance. But it also derives from a greater inclination (as the term 'style statement' implies) to use appearance to 'say' (indeed, to advertise) something about ourselves - each garment, ornament or accessory constituting an 'adjective'.

This one day workshop will explore how the creative process extends beyond the design stage to look at how individual items of jewellery take on new meanings in relationship to specific garments, accessories, hairstyles, make-up, etc.
