2018 will be the first year that Popeye loves Olive Art Space will represent 9 Greek artists at Joya Barcelona Art Jewellery & Objects Fair in Spain, in order to show the diversity of creativity in the city of Athens. This is the 9th part of 9 interviews made by Popeye loves Olive Art Space.
Was jewelry the first choice in your career? If not, from which field do you come from and what led you to jewelry?
I studied painting in the Athens School of Fine Arts (BA) and Belgrade University of Arts (MFA and PhD) in visual arts. I taught Visual Arts for twenty years, ten of which in Athens Public School of Jewelry, where I had the opportunity to engage not only with jewelry design but also with its history and evolution in relation with Arts and Architecture from prehistoric ages to the present.
What is the thing that fascinates you in what we call art jewelry?
In my opinion, jewelry, just like painting and sculpture, is a vehicle for aesthetic expression. The exciting element of jewelry is that the object is a wearable piece of art, featuring on the human body. It concentrates and communicates out to the world the aesthetic values and messages of the artist.
Which of your pieces made you feel that you’ve reached your greatest inspirational moment? What does it mean to you?
……(laughter)….I wish it will be the next one!
Which of your collections will be represented by Popeye loves Olive Art Space in Joya Barcelona Art Jewellery & Objects fair this October in Spain? Tell us a few words about it.
The Shadows series is work that begun in 2016 and continuously evolves to date. It is an exploration - literally and metaphorically - of shadows and the interaction with them. My latest pieces under the titlePierce the Veil, is an investigation of possibilities and relationships between materials, textures and colors.
