ALIEN Art Centre, located in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (R.O.C), was established in 2018 by transforming a historic building into a contemporary art museum exploring light, perception, and materiality. Its collection features James Turrell’s light installation Corinth Canal alongside micro-scale contemporary jewelry, highlighting the interplay of vision, material, and everyday life. The museum fosters cross-disciplinary dialogue across art, ecology, and architecture, and through its ALIEN MODE platform, creates immersive experiences that connect audiences with art, objects, and everyday aesthetics. It has received multiple international design awards — including the Muse Design Awards (USA), Indigo Design Award (Netherlands), London Design Awards — and is recognized as one of Taiwan’s Top 100 Cultural Landscapes.

ALIEN Art Centre
ALIEN Art Centre develops a curatorial practice that emphasizes dialogue between artworks, materials, and space. Through layered experiences of time, perception, and audience engagement, the museum encourages viewers to reconsider the relationship between art and everyday life. Its projects include thematic exhibitions, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and long-term research, with careful attention to visitor flow and spatial arrangement to facilitate natural interactions between art, objects, and audiences.
Housed in the historic Kin Ma Military Hostel in Kaohsiung — originally built in 1967 as a transit station for National Army soldiers — ALIEN Art led an adaptive restoration starting in 2016. The renovation preserved key architectural elements while transforming the space to meet contemporary curatorial needs. The museum opened in 2018, creating a dialogue between historical memory and contemporary artistic innovation.
“For art museums, when art engages with everyday life, it is not only an act of creative experimentation but also an opportunity to observe life phenomena and artistic trends,” says Yaman Shao, Director and Chief Curator.
Shao emphasizes “speaking through space,” orchestrating artworks, materials, and spatial layouts to guide viewers through layered experiences of time, physicality, and spirit.
ALIEN MODE
ALIEN MODE is a curatorial-based collection and project platform that explores alternative ways of engaging with artworks beyond the exhibition format. It operates as an extension of the curatorial vision of ALIEN Art Centre, supporting long-term relationships with artists and creative practitioners. By connecting contemporary art, objects, and everyday aesthetics, ALIEN MODE returns to art’s essential values of feeling, understanding, and companionship.
Through ALIEN MODE, ALIEN Art Centre extends its curatorial ambitions into long-term collection strategies, collaborative curatorial projects, and experimental presentations that challenge conventional boundaries between art, objects, and context.
At the same time, ALIEN MODE foregrounds contemporary jewellery and related material practices as key vectors of cultural expression. The platform advocates for recognizing these practices as artistic forms capable of
generating new knowledge, revealing cultural narratives, and expanding contemporary art discourse. By situating these practices within thematic exhibitions, cross-disciplinary projects, and extended research frameworks, ALIEN Art Centre reinforces its role as a platform for cultural innovation and international exchange, emphasizing the development of contemporary art, design, and material culture.
Opening hours: Tues - Sun 10 am - 6 pm.
Closed on Monday・Open on public holidays.
