Statement: We use hand gestures naturally every day, usually without noticing or giving it a second thought. Whether they are universal or culture-specific, hand gestures are a means of silent communication. For some groups, like divers or the hearing-impaired, they are vital. Adelman’s project draws attention to hand gestures through jewelry. Each jewel signifies a gesture and conveys its importance. The jewels were crafted using a sculpting technique in which a human hand is covered with wax. The wax then cools down on the gesturing hand and serves as a mold for metal casting.
