On April 5, 1769, the Endeavour, under the command of Captain James Cook, anchored in Matavai Bay in Tahiti. Amid the general excitement, a small group of white ship rats quietly slipped ashore and quickly established themselves with remarkable success on the fertile island.
Their numerous descendants soon adorned the proud heads of noble tribal leaders and later entered history as the Ermines of the South Seas
